Teas of Sri Lanka Once the world's largest producer of tea, the island of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is renowned for the superior quality of its tea. The majority of Sri Lanka's tea gardens are situated in the south- west of the island at a height of between 1,000 and 2,500 metres, with the finest teas grown at the highest altitudes where the cool and slightly misty climate results in a slow growth of the tea bushes, giving these teas their uniquely colourful liquor and intense flavour.

Teas of India India is one of the world's largest producers of tea, with three main speciality teas: Assam, Darjeeling and Nilgiri. The tea gardens of Assam lie in the fertile valley of the Brahmaputra River in Northern India, where tropical conditions and high levels of rainfall produce teas that are traditionally strong and pungent with a rich, malty flavour.

Teas of China With a history of tea cultivation that dates back more than 2000 years, China produces the widest range of teas in the world. The tea plant Camellia Sinensis evolved in China, and from there was exported to Japan and later throughout Asia. Our range of China teas includes both green and black teas, some of which are delicately flavoured with flower petals, and of course several varieties of that famous scented tea, Earl Grey.

Teas of Taiwan Most of the teas produced by the island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa) are Oolongs, although as you will see from the list below, green teas, black teas and lightly fermented Pouchongs are also available. Most gardens are situated in the north of the country around T'ai-pei at elevations below 1,000 feet.

Teas of Japan Japan has been producing teas for nearly 1200 years, and all production is devoted to green teas. Some, however, undergo further processing such as roasting and in the case of Genmai Cha, additions in the form of rice kernels.

Single Estate Teas Our selection of Single Estate Indian teas includes some of the very finest teas from the world's best gardens.
1st Flush teas refer to the first new shoots of the season, picked in April. These teas are extremely light, greenish and fragrant. 2nd Flush teas are picked in May and June and tend to be more rounded and fuller than 1st Flushes. Autumnal Flushes are picked in October and November and are much darker than earlier flushes.
